‘Unfit’ Afridi, Umar Akmal penalised by PCB

afridi nad umarPakistan’s star allrounder and Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal, Abdur Rehman and Raza Hasan have been fined 25% of their retainer for four months after falling behind in the new fitness criteria set by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Cricinfo reported.

Earlier this year, the PCB introduced penalties and points system for its players who were to be given fitness-based central contracts.

The new contracts stipulated that players who achieved high levels of fitness points were to be placed in the highest category while their performances in the last six months was also evaluated.

A fitness assessment of 28 players was carried out between September 6 and 8. Three players had failed to report for that evaluation due to personal reasons. Among them was Afridi, but he has since had the assessment.

Five players, meanwhile, were handed out bonuses for maintaining top levels of fitness. Shan Masood and Umar Amin will get a bonus of 17.5% every month for the four-month period, while Misbah-ul-Haq, Ahmed Shehzad and Bilawal Bhatti will get 10% each.

Announcement of squad postponed over Younis Khan’s inclusion

The Pakistan Cricket Board six-member selection committee postponed until tomorrow the announcement of the squad for the upcoming series against Australia being played in the United Arab Emirates.

Sources said that the chief selector Moin Khan and the selection committee held a meeting today at the National Stadium Karachi and discussed the possible makeup of the squad but could not reach a final decision over the inclusion of veteran batsman Younis.

The announcement of the squad was hence postponed until tomorrow which would be made after the approval of PCB chairman Shahryar Khan.

Pakistan will start their series against Australia next month with a T20 scheduled on 5th October 2014 at Dubai Cricket Stadium, UAE.

In addition to the Twenty20 match, the two teams will also play three One Day International and two Test matches.
