UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres invoked Article 99 for a ceasefire in Gaza.

In the letter written by Antonio Guterres to the Security Council, it is said that the situation in Gaza is moving towards a point of no return, if the current situation is not controlled, it may have serious effects on the region and world peace.

On the other hand, the United Arab Emirates prepared a resolution for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza in the UN Security Council, which demands the immediate implementation of Antonio Guterres’ letter.

What does Article 99 of the UN Charter say?
Article 99 of the UN Charter empowers the UN Secretary-General to refer to the Security Council any matter that threatens international peace and security.
Article 99 was previously invoked twice by the UN Secretary-General from 1 September 1959 to 31 August 1966, once in 1960 on the situation in the Congo and again in 1961 on the situation in Tunisia. went.
