Trump’s travel ban

A sharply divided United States Supreme Court upheld President Donald Trump’s ban on travel from several mostly Muslim countries, rejecting a challenge that it discriminated against Muslims or exceeded his authority. The 5-4 decision on Tuesday is a big victory for Trump on an issue that is central to his presidency, and the court’s first substantive ruling on a Trump administration policy. American President Donald trump showed his pleasure over the decision of Supreme Court and expressed his joy in a tweet. Though there is no real backlash within the country over the SC decision, but advocacy groups have expressed displeasure while cautioning against the legitimising of religious bigotry by state institutions. Some protests over the Trump’s travel ban were also reported in different states of US as protesters termed the development as a dark stain on country’s history.

Trump recently issued a proclamation restricting certain nationals of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen and North Korea from obtaining visas to travel to the U.S. Certain Venezuelan government officials and their families were also barred. The first five countries are majority Muslim nations. Trump is well known for his anti-Muslim remarks, he used the words ‘total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States’ during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Most of the countries US has put on ban are in chaos because of the direct or indirect involvement of US. For example, Libya is in chaos because of the NATO war agenda in that country. The same goes for Syria, which stands where it is today largely due to the internationalisation of the conflict. During Obama’s time in White House, US waged war in Somalia under the guise of fighting against Al Qaeda and already suffering country was left with more chaos to deal with. The same administration conducted a parallel drone programme in Yemen; run by Special Operation forces (JSOC) and the CIA, respectively, towards the same ends. Even today US providing assistance and support to Saudi led aggression in Yemen. There is no doubt that actions of US have directly and indirectly have caused disorder and chaos in all the countries Trump has put ban on. On the one side Trump’s policies are escalating wars in countries like Somalia and Syria and on the other banning people that flee in result of these US wars.
