ZHOB: Tribal barriers have made it difficult for mothers to exclusively breastfeed their babies, besides poor economic conditions to provide good food to their malnourished children.
This was revealed by Qutab Khan Mandokhail – Project Officer while speaking at a seminar on the importance of breastfeeding organized by Program for Poverty Reduction project in backward and mountainous area Badinzai here. Community members in a large number participated in the seminar.
He further said that BRSP was committed to bring health care in the life of every individual in remote areas and build a healthy society. In order to achieve substantial improvements in the health sector, PPR has initiated several activities which have a positive impact on the health care system.
“Besides health sector Balochistan Rural Support Program contributes in poverty reduction by improving health services of less-privileged communities across the province.” He added.
Highlighting the gravity of malnutrition as a problem Nutrition Officer Alamgir Mandokhail, who runs Balochistan Nutrition Program in Zhob, said that malnutrition was a burning issue in the province.
Infant should be given breast milk instead water or herbs immediately after birth in order to provide special protection from illnesses, adding breastfeeding provides more protein to toddlers and save mothers from various diseases. He said.
“Due to wrong perception that exists in our society about breastfeeding and mothers for not having enough milk turn them to bottle feeding. Bottle-fed children could never be as healthy as breastfed children”, he warned.
He said that poor nutritional status of mothers too is identified as a major cause of poor immunity among neonates, who consequently are vulnerable to a wide range of infections and associated morbidity and mortality. Mr. Alamgir added.
