KARACHI: Sindh government announced a three-day ban on pillion riding in Karachi for security of anti-polio campaigners after a police escorting a polio team was killed here on January 19.

Ban on pillion riding is the first step that Sindh government takes up as part of its security arrangements on nearly all special occasions including New Year, Eid or Ashura.

It should be mentioned here that this is the third time within a single month that the ban was inflicted upon citizens, who will suffer the restriction in effect from Tuesday 12am tillmidnight on Thursday.

Imposition of ban is deemed vital as the anti-polio vaccinators earlier on several occasions came under frequent attacks in different cities.

Sindh Home Department overnight issued the notification regarding ban on pillion riding from January 27 to 29 owing to the dilapidated security situation in the megacity.

It is pertinent to note here that the ban on pillion riding was clamped in the metropolis earlier also for the same reason. Moreover, the current year also dawned with the pillion riding ban.

The provincial government imposed the recent ban following an attack on a polio team in the city area of Orangi Town-4. An ASI Tabasum who was on duty providing security cover to the anti-polio workers, was shot dead in the incident. NNI
