Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan once again proved his detractors wrong by assembling a massive crowd at Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz’s home turf, Raiwind. The claims on the actual number are contradicting with the government claiming presence of around 30, 000 people and the Tehreek-e-Insaf claiming a presence of close to a million, there is consensus though among political analysts that it was a powerful show and one that can cause problems for the government.
During his address Imran Khan raised many key issues; the most important among them were that of the Panama Leaks probe and the increasing Indian aggression and anti-Pakistan propaganda.
The Panama Papers were released back in April, nearly 6 months ago. The revelations pertaining to the ruling Sharif family were particularly disturbing as the papers revealed that the family possess a number of highly valued properties abroad, the upsetting thing was that the Sharif family had issued many statements regarding this issue in the past and they all seemed to be hugely contradictory. Opposition parties and public pressure mounted and there was unanimous demand to conduct a thorough inquiry of the Panama Papers.
However, despite ‘presenting’ himself for accountability the government has still not started any investigation into the matter and the allegations against the Sharif family. The government has also been delaying the forming of terms of reference regarding inquiry on Panama Papers. Now Imran has upped the ante by announcing shutting down the capital if no progress is made on Panama Papers inquiry after Moharram. His choice of words during the Raiwind March speech can be questioned but his basic demand is just and one the government must take note of.
The demand for an inquiry into Panama Papers revelations must be taken seriously by the government.
