Thar toll rises to 49 as two more infants die

THARPARKAR, Nov 7 (INP): Compounded by multiple problems including rampant poverty and malnutrition, the ruthless killer famine is still on the rampage in Tharparkar and two more infants passed away overnight pushing the death toll to 49.

The latest deaths were reported from Chahchro where a newborn baby, 12-day old, breathed his last, while another newborn baby died at the Civil Hospital, Mithi. Their death mounted the overall death tally to 49 within 38 days in Tharparkar.

While Tharparkar district administration has confirmed deaths of 275 children in last 11 months due to famine.

It should be mentioned here that there are still 35 children being given medical care at Mithi Civil Hospital. Of these, three children are in critical state.

There are at least seven gaunt underfed children at Taluka Diplo hospital, 15 in Chachro hospital, nine in Nangar Parkar hospital and at least 11 children are receiving healthcare in Islampura hospital.

Despite numerous directives from Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, the health department officials could not make dispensaries functional.
