Islamabad: The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition filed against a candidate contesting elections from multiple constituencies.
According to Express News, a hearing was held in the Supreme Court on the issue of banning a candidate from contesting elections in more than one constituency. The petitioner’s lawyer said that it is against the constitution and law for any candidate to contest elections from more than one constituency. Justice Musarat Hilali said that we can abolish the law but cannot make a new one. Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar said that if you challenge the Election Act, then it is a different matter.
The petitioner said that one person, one vote is the basic structure of elections. The law gives the right to contest elections from more than one constituency. A candidate contests the same election from multiple constituencies. It is a joke for a candidate to contest elections from different constituencies. Candidates also contest elections from constituencies where they do not even have a vote. Justice Aminuddin Khan said that if the law had written not to vote for themselves, then you would have been right.
Justice Jamal Mandokhel said that the law requires the proposer and seconder to be from this constituency, now that the legislature has given permission, you cannot question the intention of the legislature. Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi said that it would be better for the petitioner to convince the political leadership. Later, the court dismissed the petition, upholding the objections of the Registrar’s Office.
