Support the team

After a promising start to the World T20 against Bangladesh, the Pakistan team was given a reality check by the Indian team on Saturday as they convincingly beat Pakistan by six-wickets at Eden Gardens.  Put into bat Pakistan looked edgy and could only post a mediocre total of 118 runs, the Indian bowlers used the conditions to their advantage and were aided by some rather defensive batting by the Pakistani top order.

The Pakistani pace-attack delivered early wickets and restricted India to just 3-23 in the fifth over but the brilliant Virat Kohli stood firm and guided his side to yet another victory over Pakistan at the World Cup.  The clash against India was much hyped in the media, with hour long transmissions dedicate to cover the match. However, as soon as the defeat became obvious there was a barrage of criticism was unleashed against the team, most of it unfounded.

From blaming Umar Akmal for talking to Imran Khan to blaming the captain Shahid Afridi for not picking the right team, the criticism came in all forms. Some media outlets also alleged that there is grouping in the team and the defeat was a result of it. The media needs to realize that criticism should be constructive and not just for the sake of ratings. Yes, the team didn’t deliver the win but ridiculing the team and conjuring up conspiracy theories is something that must be avoided. The group is still open and we can still qualify for the semi-finals. We need to back our boys not demoralize them for the sake of ratings.

Media outlets should back the team instead of ridiculing players.
