KARACHI: The Sindh government Sunday changed Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) in the case of Dr. Asim Hussain’s alleged corruption and harbouring of terrorists.
According to a notification issued following Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah’s approval, senior lawyer Nisar Ahmed Durrani has been appointed as SPP to replace Mushtaq Jahangiri.
The change of prosecutor comes a day after Rangers filed a petition in Sindh High Court requesting the court to restrain Sindh government from changing SPP Jahangiri in the high profile case.
However; Sindh Prosecutor General Shahadat Awan has said that he has no information regarding the replacement.
The final challan of the Dr Asim case has been prepared and will be submitted in the court tomorrow by the investigating officer.
According to sources, it has been stated in the challan that no proofs have been found against Dr Asim’s involvement in terrorism activities.
While talking to a private television channel, the newly selected prosecutor Nisar Durrani said that he was called in the prosecution department last night where he was told about the appointment.
He said that he has received the file but has not yet read it whereas he will present before the court tomorrow as he will Karachi tomorrow from Hyderabad.
Nisar Durrani also confirmed that he has not received the notification regarding the appointment.
The move is likely to deepen row between PPP-led provincial government and the paramilitary force over trial of Dr. Asim Hussain who is a former federal minister, a leader of PPP and close confidante of former president Asif Ali Zardari.
Sources said the change of prosecutor might lead to release of Dr. Asim Hussain who is facing charges of corruption and treatment of terrorists at his hospital.
He was detained on August 26 by officials of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Rangers in multiple cases of corruption and terror financing. The accused has spent three months in Rangers custody and later remained in police and NAB custody. NNI
