He said that although there are some problems but the situation is very much under control and the perception that South Punjab has militant sanctuaries is wrong. Speaking about the controversy surrounding appointments of Inspector General of Sindh Police and Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, the acting IG said that in Punjab such a controversy was avoided by giving the charge (acting) of the position to the senior most officer which is a good precedent. Khattak said that the recent operations in Punjab with cooperation with Rangers have been fruitful and have resulted in a number of high profile arrests. It is pertinent to mention that on Friday police, security and intelligence agencies had conducted a joint combing operation in Lahore's Factory Area near Punjab Housing Society, wherein they were fired upon by terrorists. The ensuing exchange of fire had killed a terrorist, while a woman along with two other terror suspects was arrested. The female terror suspect arrested following the encounter was identified as a MBBS student Noreen Leghari. Responding to a question by Sardar Khan Niazi, Khattak said that as per statistics law and order situation has improved in the province. The acting IG said that the major problem facing the police department is that of discipline within the force but assured that steps are being taken to fix this issue. Khattak, however said that the process is one that will take time and there is no quick remedy to fixing the police system. Commenting about the presence of Rangers in the province Khattak said that the situation in the province was very much under control even before the Rangers were called but said that the presence has further improved the situation.
