SHANGLA: Residents of Faiz Darra village in Kana tehsil have made a wooden suspension bridge on self-help basis after waiting for years for the government to build a jeepable bridge on the Kana River to connect their village of over 500 households with rest of the district.

The temporary wooden bridge was completed on Thursday and crossed over by a pickup van, giving a joy to the local people. Earlier, they would cross the river through a pedestrian wooden bridge.

A resident Latifullah told this correspondent that the government had approved a jeepable bridge for the area and work order was also issued to a contractor, but despite passage of two years the project could not be started.

He said they had frequently approached provincial minister Shaukat Yousafzai in this regard, but the issue was still unresolved.

He said that last week people of Faiz Darra and Shaheed Sar called a meeting and decided to build the bridge on self-help basis.

Another resident Mohammad Saleem said that they collected donations for buying material and wooden planks for the bridge.

He said the bridge was still vulnerable, but it would minimise their sufferings for the time being.

An elder Dr Abdul Kabir urged the government build a jeepable bridge on priority to provide relief to the people.

MINERS’ BODIES: Two young coal miners, who lost their lives in separate mine incidents in Cherat area of Nowshera and Darra Adamkhel area of Kohat the other day, were buried at their ancestral graveyards in Shangla on Thursday.

Local people said that Ihsanullah, a resident of Banar, died in a mine incident in Cherat and Amani Mulk of Pirabad in Darra Adamkhel.

INSPECTION: Assistant commissioner, Bisham, Mohammad Jawad visited the government high school and the government primary schools for boys and girls in Maira on Thursday and found some teachers absent from duty. He directed for initiating a disciplinary action against them.
