LAHORE: President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Shehbaz Sharif has requested that Nawaz Sharif to be provided facilities in jail that are in line with his stature as a former PM.
In a letter to Caretaker Prime Minister, Nasirul Mulk, Shehbaz has asked the authorities to ensure that medical facilities are provided to Nawaz. He also requested that the former prime minister’s medical checkup be conducted regularly during his stay in jail.
The former Punjab chief minister also asked for permission for Nawaz’s doctor to visit regularly visit the jail, stating that the former has a heart disease that requires regular checkups.
The deposed prime minister and his daughter Maryam were arrested on July 13 upon their arrival in Lahore, a week after being sentenced to prison in the Avenfield Properties corruption reference. They were imprisoned in Adiala jail on the same day.
Earlier the day, Senator Pervaiz Rasheed demanded same relief for the former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar Awan as former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur had been given.
Talking to the newsmen outside the Islamabad High Court, Pervez Rasheed said that the court earlier upheld that no candidate should be barred from participating in the electoral process till the July 25 polls are over and this was the basis on which Zardari and Talpur were granted relief.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader urged, “Nawaz, Maryam, Capt (retd) Safdar and Qamar-ul-Islam Raja should be granted the same relief.”
“Injustice was done to Qamar-ul-Islam Raja in favour of Chaudhry Nisar,” he added.
