Sensationalism in electronic media

Electronic media in Pakistan once again showed immaturity and irresponsibility. Putting aside all the important issues prevailing in the society, it often decides to give airtime in abundance to the issues which could not in any way be considered to have national importance.

This time Chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf became the victim of sensationalism reporting of electronic media. Issue was not related to the politics of PTI but alleged third marriage of the party leader. Even after denying the news reports by PTI spokesman and later by Imran himself, Television news channels kept beating the drums all day long of Imran’s third marriage. Not only this, pictures and family history of a woman, who according to media was going to marry Imran, were shown with tunes of bollwood songs in the background. Latter the same woman expressed deep anger over unethical practice of media. She claimed that she was a housewife with children and never met with Imran Khan, and unethical practice of some media houses to show her pictures without her consent has created huge panic in her family. Imran Khan was also furious and lamented on media to spread false news of his marriage. He said that news was based on absolute lies and he never met with the women shown on the media.

It was being considered that with the passage of time electronic media would be more responsible, but sadly moral and ethical standards of electronic media are collapsing with every passing day. There are pressing issues in the country that directly affect Pakistanis, but media hardly giving any airtime to these issues.

It is bitter truth that moral and ethical standards of electronic media are collapsing.
