In the midst of ongoing protests against the death of young Iranian woman Mahsa Amini in police custody, riot police and security forces in Iran battled with protesters in dozens of locations on Tuesday, according to official television and social media.

Amini, 22, a Kurd from the Iranian city of Saqez, was detained by the morality police, who uphold the Islamic Republic’s rigorous clothing code, this month in Tehran for “unsuitable apparel.”

Her passing has provoked the largest display of dissent on Iranian streets since 2019’s demonstrations against an increase in gas prices.

Videos shared on Twitter showed protesters squabbling with security personnel in Tehran, Tabriz, Karaj, Qom, Yazd, and many other Iranian cities, despite an increasing death toll and arrests by the authorities.State television reported that police shot tear gas at what it referred to as “rioters” in certain places to disperse them.

Social media videos from Iran showed protestors yelling “Woman, Life, Liberty” as women waved and set their veils on fire.

According to Iranian sources and the Internet blockage watchdog NetBlocks on Twitter, authorities have banned internet connection in numerous regions to make it harder for protesters to publish films on Occasionally, security forces have retaliated with live ammunition, “The declaration read.

Officials said that 41 people had died during the protests, including police officers and members of a pro-government militia. Although Iranian human rights organisations claim a larger death toll.

According to the Iranian human rights organisation Hengaw, “nearly 1,000 Kurdish demonstrators have been jailed in the last ten days,” and “18 people have been killed, 898 people have been injured.”

In Kurdistan, Iran, more than 70 women have been detained between Monday and Friday; at least four of them are minors, according to Hengaw’s statement on Tuesday.
