The recent SCO Heads of Government summit in Islamabad marked a significant milestone for Pakistan, reaffirming its commitment to multilateralism and Eurasian connectivity. The event brought together leaders from various member states, observers, and international organizations, sending a clear message that Pakistan is open for business and ready to play a pivotal role in regional cooperation.

The summit’s joint communiqué highlighted several key themes, including economic cooperation, environmental protection, cultural exchanges, and the establishment of the SCO Development Bank. Notably, the document emphasized the need to increase the use of national currencies in mutual settlements, a clear jab at Western sanctions and the dominance of the US dollar. This move aligns with the SCO’s broader goal of reducing dependence on Western financial systems.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif used the platform to address pressing global issues, including climate change, the situation in Afghanistan, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. His remarks underscored Pakistan’s commitment to regional stability and its concern for the welfare of people around the world.

Hosting such a high-profile event was a significant achievement for Pakistan, given its recent challenges. The successful organization of the summit showcased the country’s ability to provide a secure and conducive environment for international cooperation. The joint communiqué acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts, recognizing the “constructive and friendly atmosphere” in which the summit took place.

While the SCO’s vision for regional connectivity and economic integration is ambitious, it will require concerted efforts from all member states. Bureaucratic hurdles and differing national interests may pose challenges, but the potential benefits of collaboration are substantial. For Pakistan, increased connectivity with its Eurasian neighbors is essential for economic growth and development.

In a world characterized by fragmentation and conflict, the SCO offers a platform for states to come together and pursue common goals. By fostering cooperation and dialogue, the SCO can contribute to regional stability, economic prosperity, and the well-being of its people. Rather than viewing the SCO as a revival of “bloc politics,” it is essential to embrace its potential as a force for positive change in the Eurasian region.
