ISLAMABAD: Spillways of Rawal Dam were opened on Friday to release excess water after the dam was filled to its capacity due to incessant rains over the last week. It is rare that spillways of the Rawal Dam are opened in winter season.

SDO Rawalpindi Rana Bilal said that due to incessant rainfall in the past week Rawal Dam was filled to its capacity i-e 1752 feet and the authorities had to open the spillways to release the excessive water. The met office has forecast more rains in the coming days and to avoid flooding in the catchment areas, the spill ways were opened on a sunny day.

He said that the spillways will remain open till 3PM Saturday (tomorrow) during which 2000 cusecs of water would be released.
