President leaves for Turkey to attend Erdogan’s inauguration

ISLAMABAD (NNI): President Mamnoon Hussain has left for Turkey to represent the country in the Presidential handover ceremony for Turkish President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry said.

The President is accompanied by the Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Mr. Sartaj Aziz.

The ceremony is being attended by many Heads of State and Government as well as other high-level foreign dignitaries.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was elected as the 12th President of Turkey in the first ever direct Presidential elections held on 10 August.

“The President’s visit would reinforce efforts for closer bilateral cooperation and further strengthen the growing partnership between the two countries,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Reports earlier suggested Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was scheduled to travel to Turkey; however, he dropped the idea in view of the current political tensions in the country.

Two opposition parties have staged sit-ins in the capital Islamabad for two weeks to press for resignation of the Prime Minister. The protests have disturbed normal life in the country.
