QUETTA (INP): A three-day polio immunisation campaign began in 30 districts of Balochistan on Monday amid tight security.
According to the Coordinator of the Emergency Operation Centre, Balochistan, Syed Faisal Ahmed, all arrangement have been completed and they were aiming to inoculate around 240,000 children along with vitamin A drops.
The coordinator explained that this time around 9,700 teams are participating in the drive, including 8,234 mobile teams, 870 fixed site teams and around 600 transit point teams.
He said that all security arrangements had been made and health workers and other staff involved in the campaign are being protected. He added that all law enforcement agencies have been deployed for security purposes.
He said that polio cases in the country have decreased and only one case each was reported from Gilgit-Baltistan and Punjab with none from Balochistan this year.
“It is important to have the anti-polio drive now as many families are travelling from warmer regions of the country to Balochistan,” he said, adding that teams at transit points are paying special attention to vaccination of children thre.
Mr Ahmed said that along with the polio drops, vaccinating children against other diseases was also necessary as it would improve their immune systems.
