KARACHI (Agencies): Police authorities on Monday claimed that they have made headway in investigation into the murder of Dr. Shakil Auj, the Dean of Islamic Studies faculty, who was shot dead in Karachi on Thursday.
According to reports, DIG East Munir Ahmed Sheikh, who is heading a six-member investigation team, held a meeting with Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser and briefed him over progress so far made in the probe.
The team told VC that that many proofs have been acquired by the law-enforcers and that academic and nonacademic staff of the university will be included in investigation.
A day after the murder, police detained, for interrogation, three senior teachers of the university.
Dr. Abdul Rasheed, Dr. Sami-uz-Zamaan and Dr. Nasir of the Islamic Studies department, were taken into custody Tuesday.
Police revealed that the teachers were included in the investigation for threatening the slain professor in the past, adding that they had been sent to jail in 2012 following an FIR filed by Dr. Shakil Auj who claimed to have received threats from his colleagues.
However, Dr. Auj later withdrew the FIR and forgave the three teachers.
A six-member investigation team has been formed under DIG East Munir Ahmed Sheikh to probe into the assassination.
Other members of the committee include SSP East Syed Pir Muhammad Shah, SSP SIU CIA Muhammad Farooq Awan, SSP Investigation Abdul Hameed Khosa and other senior officers.
Meanwhile, teachers of the KU suspended academic activities and staged a protest demonstration in the university, calling for arrest of the culprits.
VC Dr. Muhammad Qaiser has appealed the academic staff to shun the protest and revive academic activities.
