Police and Rangers were responsible to stop terrorists from attack at Karachi airport: Sheikh Aftab

ISLAMABAD, Sept 26 (INP): Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmed shifting the responsibility of terrorists attack at Karachi airport, Friday stated that it was duty of Police and Rangers to stop terrorists out side the Airport.

Replying to question during meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat regarding security issues of Airports, Sheikh Aftab said Sindh Police, rangers and other security agencies may be asked and responsibility should be fixed.

During the briefing the Committee inquired that how Karachi Airport incident occurred despite intelligence sharing by M/o Interior. The Committee was informed that specific intelligence report was not shared with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Airport Security Force (ASF) played its role effectively to secure the installation at airport and many ASF’s soldiers were killed. The Committee appreciated the sacrifices of ASF martyrs.

The Committee also took the issue of flight delay incident that occurred on 15th September, 2014. Committee was informed that flight was initially delayed for one and half hours as a result of late arrival of incoming aircraft PK-369 and due to technical fault. It incurred further delay of 25 minutes due to late arrival of two parliamentarians Mr. Ramesh Kumar and Mr. Rehman Malik.  The incident was inquired and disciplinary action against the responsible was taken promptly. Mr. Nadeem Abro, Shift Station Manager and Mr. Shahzad Ali, Terminal Manager have been suspended from duties with immediate effect. Further action will be taken against the passengers who were involved in agitation/misbehavior with parliamentarians.

The Committee also discussed the issue of construction of new Islamabad Airport, and was briefed in detail by the representative of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The Committee decided to visit new Islamabad Airport on 13th October, 2014 for investigation and physical verification of work done by the CAA. The Committee directed Managing Director, PIA to provide a detail/comprehensive report on the local and international loans taken by the PIA since 2006 to date.

The meeting was attended by Syed Javed Ali Shah, Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhary, Sardar Muhammad Irfan Dogar, Ms. Parveen Masood Bhatti, Ms. Nighat Parveen Mir, Ms. Shahnaz Saleem, Mrs. Seema Mohiuddin Jameeli, and Ms. Farhana Qamar MNAs.
