ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Tuesday claimed that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was unaware of the women protection act passed by Punjab Assembly last month.
Talking to media outside his residence, Fazl said Sharif in the meeting with him expressed dismay at the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who is also the prime minister’s younger brother.
The prime minister pledged that he would address the reservations of religious parties on the Punjab Protection of Women Against Violence Act 2016, the JUI-F chief said. “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif heard our reservations and promised to amend the law so that it doesn’t contravene the teachings of the Holy Quran,” he added.
Earlier this month, the Council of Islamic Ideology had advised the government on the compatibility of laws with Islam, declared the Women’s Protection Act un-Islamic. A lawyer has also filed a petition in the Federal Sharia court asking it to strike down the law.
