PM convenes meeting of PML-N and allied parties leaders to discuss election of Senate Chairman and Dy Chairman

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has summoned a meeting of PML-N and allied parties leaders here tomorrow (Saturday) to discuss the election of Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Senate.

The Prime Minister will extensively discuss with the parties leaders about the possibility of election of PML-N chairman of the Senate.

It is worth mentioning that both the PML-N and the PPP are vying for the coveted posts of Chairman and Deputy Chairman but they do not have the required numerical strength in the upper house of parliament.

The PML-N is banking on the support of its allies including NP, PKMAP and JUI-F.  However the support of JUI-F is in doubt as the party of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, allied with the PPP and ANP in the Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa.  Though the JUI-F is part of the government at the centre but Maulana Fazlur Rehman would bargain with both the PML-N and the PPP and expected to demand the post of Deputy Chairman.

According to sources, if the PML-N gets assurance of required number of votes, it is expected to field the senior leader and Party Chairman Raja Mohammad Zafarul Haq for the post of Chairman.

On the other hand there are at least four aspirants in the PPP for the post including leader of the opposition Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Mian Raza Rabbani, Rehman Malik and Farooq Naek. A final decision will be taken by party’s co chairman and former President Asif Ali Zardari.
