LAHORE, Nov 20 (INP) A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) for his trial under treason charges.
The petition filed by a citizen Mohammad Imtiaz Goraya said that Sheikh Rashid during his provocative speeches at public meetings and press conferences incited the people to stand up against the state. He said if any body indulges in such provocative acts, he is tried under article 6 of the constitution.
He therefore prayed the honourable court that orders be issued for his arrest and a treason case heard against him.
During the hearing of the petition Justice Shahazada Mazhar held that as it is a constitutional matter, a full bench be formed to hear the case.
A three member bench of the LHC headed by Justice Khalid Mahmood Khan will hear the case.
Earlier, the government on November 14 expressed its intention to take action against Sheikh Rasheed’s inflammatory speech that he made during Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) rally in Nankana Sahib. The government believes Sheikh Rasheed’s comments incited violence.
According to the government sources, Sheikh Rasheed incited the public against government and state institutions by sparking ‘hatred’.
