Coach of Pakistan Cricket Team Waqar Younis has resigned from coaching three months before ending his contract with Pakistan Cricket Board. A day before T20 captain of Pakistan team Shahid Afridi also stepped down from captaincy of the team.
Both resignations came in the wake of dismal performance of team in Asia Cup and World T20. Pakistan could win only three games in both tournaments which also include one match against associate team United Arab Emirates.
Resignations of captain or coach were on the cards but PCB handled the situation in an ugliest manner. Waqar Younis presented his confidential team report to the Chairman of PCB but report was made public within hours. Act of leaking the report to media made Waqar furious and while talking to media he lamented the board and termed leaking of report as an ethical offense. He was of the view that report was meant to bring positive change in the players regarding their attitude and techniques in connection with cricket.
Waqar stressed on the need to strengthen domestic structure of cricket
Indeed our domestic structure is poor, which is not giving us players of the caliber of Inzimam, Yousaf, Younis, Wasim, Shoaib and Waqar etc. But in contrast, teams in rest of the world are coming up with excellent young talent. We have witnessed great hitting from number 8 batsman of West Indies to clinch World T20 trophy.
Cricket Board has successfully found a scapegoat and non-cricketing ‘Babus’ who work on hefty salaries would keep ruling empire of PCB. PCB should pump money at the gross root level in order to bring up talent at the highest level.
PCB needs to improve domestic cricket structure to find and polish young talent.
