sessionISLAMABAD, Sep 19 (INP): The parliament on Friday strongly condemned the sit-ins in the Red Zone of Islamabad and reiterated its unequivocal, unwavering and unqualified resolve to uphold the supremacy of the constitution, democratic system, sanctity of the state institutions and the rule of law which are the founding pillars of the state of Pakistan as envisaged by Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

In a resolution moved by Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar and passed unanimously by the parliament before it was prorogued, the house said that the unconstitutional demands of the agitating parties will never be accepted. It regretted the breach of parliament sanctity and noted with great concern the incalculable damage caused to the honour of the country and the economy. It said the sit-ins resulted in the cancellation/postponement of visits of important foreign dignitaries including the president of China, during whose visit MOUs for $32 billion were to be signed .

It expressed satisfaction that all the democratic forces have displayed extraordinary unity and resolve to stand together to confront the challenges to the supremacy of the parliament and the constitution.

The resolution said the dharnas have diverted attention from the plight of displaced persons affected by the hugely important Zarb-e-Azb operation launched by our valiant armed forces, and thousands of persons affected by the recent floods’ in Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Sindh.

The parliament appreciated the government’s restrain in the face of provocation and its efforts to achieve a negotiated, amicable settlement with the two parties.

The parliament placed on record its sense of satisfaction that at this important juncture in the nation’s history, all democratic forces in parliament have displayed extraordinary unity and resolve to stand together to defeat the direct challenge to the supremacy of the constitution and the sovereignty of parliament.

The joint sitting of the parliament also appreciated and acknowledged with gratitude, the tremendous support for the democratic system expressed by all sections of civil society, including the legal fraternity, business community, technical and academic professionals, media and indeed, citizens across the length and breadth of Pakistan.
