Pakistan warns against use of water as instrument of coercion or war

NEW YORK: Pakistan on Wednesday warned against the use of water as instrument of coercion or war. Speaking in the UN Security Council debate on water, peace and security, Pakistan Permanent Representative Dr. Maleeha Lodhi said that access to water is a fundamental right that must be protected at all the times. She said Pakistan denounces any such practice, real or threatened, as we believe that to be contrary to international humanitarian law. She said that international community must remain vigilant to any sign of unwillingness to maintain cooperation in sharing of waters. The envoy said that Indus Water Treaty is an example of what can be achieved through bilateral agreement.

Earlier, Speaking at a UN session on Shanghai Cooperation Organization in New York, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the World body Maleeha Lodhi said Pakistan has expressed its desire to be granted full membership status of permanent member of Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Maleeha Lodhi said Pakistan is geographically one of the most important countries in South Asia. She said the world nations are facing multiple challenges like poverty, human rights violations, several unresolved disputes extremism and terrorism.
