UFA, Russia: Pakistan’s full membership of Shanghai Cooperation Organization has been approved by the SCO Council of Heads of State.
Now Pakistan will have to fulfill certain statutory and legal requirements before the country formally becomes a full member.
The leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Friday ratified a resolution on starting the procedures of granting India and Pakistan full membership of the organization.
The announcement was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Pakistan and India will join the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as permanent members, a group dominated by Russia and China which also includes former Soviet republics in Central Asia.
Russia sees the organisation, expanding for the first time since its creation in 2001, as a counterweight to Western alliances.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said Friday the admission of India and Pakistan as new full members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will inject new impetus into SCO’s all-ranging cooperation.
Xi and other leaders passed a resolution Friday on starting the procedures of granting India and Pakistan full membership of the organization at the 15th SCO summit in the southwestern Russian city of Ufa. NNI
