In one of the worst mass shooting in the history of the United States, a total of 54 people have been killed while 50 are seriously injured. Shooting was carried out by a US citizen of Afghan origins Omar Mateen, in a popular gay nightclub, Pulse, in Orlando on Sunday.
Though individual acts can’t stir the debate of involvement of some specific religion in the extremist activities but this act of terrorism has once again polarized the debate on alleged link between Islam and terrorism. Naturally, different segments of Muslim community condemned this act of terrorism, reiterating the importance of keeping Islam apart from an act of such barbarity. But some segment in US started blaming Islam for the sad incident, including Donald Trump Presidential candidate who has been criticized for his harsh stand against Muslims living in America. But after the gory incident his views are gaining popularity in the US. Sad incident has negative implications for rest of the Muslim community living in the United States. It would indeed be unfair to label an entire religion that contains a great deal of diversity, and is spread throughout the world, with a broad brush as violent or extremist.
But it would not be wise to use this sad incident to spread hatred towards any community. Hatred would beget hatred; there is also need to revisit gun control law in the US. According to statistics guns have killed more Americans in the US in the last fifty years than every US war. Concerned authority should think that why powerful weapons are easily accessible in the US.
Sad incident resulted in an individual act should not be used to spread hatred towards any community.
