Opposition rejects judicial commission tasked to probe Panama leaks

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Judicial commission pertaining to probe of Panama leaks, announced by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was rejected by the opposition in Punjab and National Assemblies on Wednesday.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Mehmoodur Rasheed has moved a resolution in connection with the recent uproar in country over alleged offshore dealings of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family.

Panama leaks expose offshore companies controlled by 140 politicians including Sharif family

Rasheed said that an unbiased probe requires in-service judges of the Supreme Court (SC) and not retired.

He demanded Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to appear before the commission after handing over his resignation.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has submitted adjournment motion in lower house of the parliament seeking debate of the house over leaked Panama Papers which showed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family have offshore accounts and properties in London.

The motions came a day after the premier announced formation of a single judge inquiry commission to probe allegations against his family, calling Panama leaks so-called leaks and conspiracy against his family.

The motion was submitted by PTI’s Shireen Mazari saying that Nawaz Sharif is himself a party in the matter; hence, he is not entitled to form a commission.

PPP had already demand resignation of the Prime Minister after the Panama Papers revelations.

Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Shaikh Rasheed Ahmed also submitted adjournment motion.

“This is unacceptable, who are they themselves forming commissions and deciding its terms and conditions…. This is a joke,” Shaikh Rasheed said while talking to media.

He called upon the PM to step down.

The PTI senior leader sought debate in the house over the issue.
