Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Wednesday recognized East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine after the controversial move of the United States to move its embassy in Jerusalem and declare it Israel’s capital.
Controversial move of US was a sheer violation of international law and it hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims all over the world. In response of US action, representatives of the 57 Muslim-majority states attended the OIC summit in Turkish capital to denounce the recent controversial US move. Joint declaration not only condemned the unlawful decision of US on the status of (Al Quds) Jerusalem, but also called on the world to recognize East Jerusalem as the occupied capital of Palestinian state.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hosted the OIC summit and called on Muslim world to recognize Jerusalem as Palestine capital. He branded Israel as an occupying and terrorist state, saying, “Only Israel, which occupies Jerusalem, supported the U.S. unlawful decision. We thank all the countries who did not accept this illegitimate decision.” Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that after extremely biased decision US did not fit in the role of broker in Israeli-Palestinian peace deal and should be replaced as mediator by the United Nations (UN). He said that despite that fact that his country remained committed to international resolutions, US announced a ridiculous decision putting aside international laws. He said his people would no longer accept the US as a peace maker.
Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi also strongly condemning the US move and urged Washington to withdraw its decision. He said Pakistanis stand by Palestine and its people. Mr. Abbasi also rightly highlighted the seven decade long brutalities of Israeli forces in Palestine. All the participants strongly urged the international community to recognise Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital.
After condemnable move of US President Donald Trump, Muslim countries had to unite on a single platform to form future course of action. Holding OIC summit was need of time to give a clear message that all Islamic countries strongly reject US decision. It is good omen that all representing countries strongly condemned unlawful move of US and pledged their support for the rights of Palestinian people. Most of the countries in European Union have also expressed reservations over US decision as they believe two-state solution remains the only path in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
