ISLAMABAD: A Non-bailable arrest warrant for Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz has been issued by a local Islamabad court on Friday while hearing a case filed by civil society members.
According to details, cleric had been alleged of inciting people to violence during Lal Masjid Operation in 2007. During the hearing, the court was requested to issue an arrest warrant for Abdul Aziz for investigation, based on a First Information Report (FIR) that was previously registered against him at Aabpara Police Station.
Justice Saqib Jawad of Islamabad’s civil court issued this warrant in the same inciting to violence case. Aabpara police station has been ordered to arrest Maulana Abdul Aziz and present him before the court.
It is pertinent to mention here that following the deadly attack on Army Public School in Peshawar, Maulana Abdu Aziz while talking to a private TV channel refused to condemn the carnage, which provided a reason to the civil society activists to stage protests a week before outside the capital’s Lal Masjid. The protesters chanted slogans against the cleric, staff members of the mosque came out in defense of Maulana and warned protesters of dire consequences if chanting against cleric would not be stopped. Police arrived to settle the scene and asked the protesters to disperse.
