PM discuss political crisis with army chief

ISLAMABAD, Aug 28 (INP): Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif Thursday called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif here in the backdrop of worsening political crisis amid the unending sit-ins of the PTI and PAT on the Constitution Avenue.

According to a spokesman of the PM House, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the army chief agreed to take all necessary measures to restore talks with the protesting parties in a bid to end the political impasse.

They also agreed for the resolution of the issue in the best interest of the country at the earliest.

The premier reportedly took the COAS into confidence over the government delegation’s meeting with Dr Tahirul Qadri.

According to sources, it was agreed that all the issues will be resolved through talks. According to sources, the prime minister said no illegal and unconstitutional demand of the protesting parties will be accepted by the government.

A private news channel reported that the army chief said the use of force can only be a last option. He said the Army and the masses should not be brought face to face and the Army should be kept away from any confrontation. He said it will be better if all the issues were resolved politically.

This was the second such meeting in a week between the premier and the COAS, the first held on Tuesday, August 26 during which the two had agreed to immediately resolve the political cul-de-sac.INP
