Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Waseem Akhtar has been elected Karachi’s mayor on Wednesday. After the conclusion of the elections while talking to the media persons he vowed to work alongside other political parties to solve the issues facing the metropolis. Without naming the chief of the MQM Altaf Hussain, Karachi’s newly elected mayor vowed that his party head has asked him to work for the betterment of the city and he was not only mayor of MQM but the mayor of entire city. He said that he will work with collaboration of other political parties and work for the betterment of the people according to the guidelines of founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
There if one bizarre fact in this all episode of becoming mayor of the biggest city of the country that Waseem akhtar was arrested by police last month on suspicion of aiding alleged militants and on polling day he smartly arrived in an armoured police vehicle to cast his vote. A question arises that would the mayor of the city serve his office from prison? Clarity required that how he would look after the affairs of city while in prison.
Recent elections showed that party holds almost unassailable vote bank in the metropolitan city. Even after the embarrassing situation MQM head put the party in it during the shameful violent acts of past three days, it is a fact that presence of party is visible in the city and the party is in charge of most of the city’s local affairs. Therefore, while respecting the mandate of public it must be treated accordingly. On the other hand MQM needs to demonstrate clearly that it is departing from its old ways of doing things, the military wing, ruling the city through fear, and the political path is best way forward.
