Nawaz’ resignation not negotiable under any circumstances: Dar

September 3, 2014

ISLAMABAD: As the political turmoil continues amidst some indications of a breakthrough, a largely united parliament Wednesday resolved to protect the sanctity of the elected house and would not allow the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign. Reacting strongly to the derogatory language of Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaaf and Awami Tehreek against the Parliament, they said the Parliament represents the voice of 180 million people and it will complete its mandated five year term.

The members once again pledged to standby the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for the sake of democracy and constitution.

The joint session of Parliament for the second day Wednesday saw all parties putting aside their differences to stand against what they termed were attempts to derail the democratic process.

Taking the floor on Wednesday, ANP’s Senator Zahid Khan said that PM Nawaz Sharif should not resign at any cost as it would bring insult to the parliament. He said that after fourteen months the joint session of the Parliament was called but it is better to be late than never.

Dubbing the 2013 election as ‘selection’, he said that they accepted the election for the sake of country and alleged that biggest fraud was done in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa. He said that while they were lifting the bodies of the martyrs in their province, other leaders were busy in campaigning during elections.

The senator said that the chief minister of KP ditched his province and has come to besiege Islamabad. He said that we should be ashamed of ourselves on pointing fingers at each others.

He warned that if the constitution is suspended today, nobody would be able to restore it in future.

Rising on a point of personal explanation on the speech of Shah Mahmood Qureshi to the joint sitting of the Parliament, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said it was an attempt to create misunderstanding on certain issues.

He rejected the assertion of PTI Vice Chairman regarding the attack on the parliament saying their leader congratulated Tahirul Qadri on this assault.

He said it has been categorical stance of the government from day one that the Prime Minister will not resign under any circumstances and this issue is non-negotiable.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman said PTI and PAT are pursuing the same agenda and their leaders have also publicly declared their association.

Hasil Bizenjo said there is wider consensus amongst all political parties that they will not let any harm come to the Parliament and the constitution. He cautioned that if there is no constitution, country would not remain in tact as very little space is left in Pakistan.

He said it was democratic attitude of the government and the opposition parties which allowed the protesting parties to stage their sit-ins in the federal capital.

He said the Chinese President is coming on an important visit and if his visit was postponed, then their Dharna would be not against government but Pakistan.

Aftab Khan Sherpao, while addressing the joint session of the parliament said that Nawaz Sharif will stay as the prime minister for the next four years.

He said that the protesting groups were showing their lack of trust in Supreme Court by not accepting judicial commission. He asked as to why PTI MPAs were not submitting their resignations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He clarified that they were not with PML-N, but in the opposition and playing their role as an opposition party. He said that the parliament will save the country from the current crisis.

QWP leader said it is not in the PM’s hands now to decide about his resignation but the parliament is to decide.

He asked the protesting leaders to share the rigging evidences with the opposition at least so that they could also join hands with them in demanding the prime minister’s resignation and dissolution of assemblies.

Rising on a point of order after the speech of Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Mahmood Khan Achakzai said the joint sitting should pass a resolution against the attacks on the parliament and PTV. He said the resolution should also carry the signatures of the PTI as they have disassociated themselves from these attacks.
