After President Arif Alvi authorised his nomination in accordance with Article 101 (1) of the Constitution, Kamran Tessori of the MQM-P will take the oath of office as Sindh’s 34th governor today. After Imran Ismail, the previous governor of Sindh, resigned from his position following Imran Khan’s removal as prime minister in April, the position of governor of Sindh was left empty.

Tessori was just reinstated into the MQM-P. Many party members had raised their concerns, which led to debate over the decision.Tessori was re-inducted into the MQM-P as the deputy convener during a meeting on September 9 that was presided over by the party’s convener, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui. But other senior party leaders who weren’t present at the meeting gave it harsh criticism. They openly voiced their disapproval of the party’s choice.

The main cause of the disagreement between former MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar and other party officials, which ultimately resulted in the latter’s expulsion from the party, was Tessori. The MQM-P coordination committee ousted Sattar from his position as convener because he insisted on giving Tessori the party’s nomination for a by-election.Later, Sattar established the MQM Restoration Committee, a new division of the party.

What made Tessori the nominee?

Nasreen Jalil, a senior MQM-P politician, was initially under consideration for the position, and a summary was also submitted for her appointment as governor, but the president didn’t endorse her nomination despite over five months passing.Tessori would serve as a link between Sindh and the Centre, a MQM-P spokeswoman said in a statement following the president’s assent.

In this regard, the spokesperson stated that the position of governor of Sindh has been vacant since the inception of the current administration. After the president approved Tessori’s nomination, the names of Kamran Tessori and Abdul Waseem were sent for approval.
