LONDON: London Police on Wednesday arrested leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Muhammad Anwar on suspicion of money laundering.
Talking to a private TV channel, MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi confirmed reports regarding arrest of Muhammad Anwar. Haider Abbass Rizvi said he [M. Anwar] was arrested by London Metropolitan Police at 9 in the morning on Wednesday.
Haider Abbass Rizvi further said that Muhammad Anwar has been taken to Central London Police Station where he is accompanied by a legal team.
Muhammad Anwar is a senior member of MQM’s Coordination Committee at its London Secretariat and a close companion of MQM Chief Altaf Hussain.
Earlier, the London Metropolitan Police has also issued a statement saying “Officers from the Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) have arrested a 64-year-old man on suspicion of money laundering. This arrest is part of an on going investigation into money laundering. The arrest took place at a residential address in north westLondon.”
He has since been taken into custody at a central London police station and enquiries continue.
Five other men previously arrested in connection with the investigation, into money laundering, remain on police bail.
Police bail is the term used when a person arrested in connection with a criminal offence is released from police custody whilst the police investigation continues until they are next required to appear at a police station.When a person is released on police bail they are required to return to the police station at a specific date and time.
Chief of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Altaf Hussain, who has been living in London for last two decades, was also arrested in the case last year. He was released on bail later on which is expiring this month.
