Former South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs, who was in Sri Lanka as the head coach of the Lanka Premier League side Colombo Kings, resigned on Saturday and immediately left for South Africa after 3 of his family members back home tested positive for Covid-19.
“The team owners informed us that Herschelle Gibbs had resigned as coach for personal reasons. He will leave for South Africa tonight,” Colombo Kings skipper Angelo Mathews said on Saturday.
On Sunday, Gibbs took to Twitter to say that his mother was in hospital due to Covid-related issues, while his brother was also in hospital and sister was still recovering from Covid-19.
“Mom in hospital covid reasons. Brother was also in hospital from covid and sister recovering from covid.. had to come back home,” Gibbs said.
He also thanked all the people for their love and support and wrote, ‘I appreciate all the best wishes and prayers people!! .. wish you guys all the strength and most importantly, good health in life.’
Interestingly, Herschelle Gibbs was never the first choice as the head coach for the Colombo Kings. He had arrived in Sri Lanka as the commentator for the inaugural Lanka Premier League.
Former Sri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore was to coach the Colombo Kings. However, he pulled out of Lanka Premier League due to personal reasons.
Later, Whatmore was replaced by former England fast bowler Kabir Ali but he tested positive for Covid-19 and subsequently withdrew from the league. It was after that, the franchise roped in Gibbs with less than a week to go for the tournament to start.ADVERTISEMENT
