Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif in a high-level briefing at Rangers Headquarters Karachi on Sunday directed all commanders to leave ‘no stone unturned’ finding the perpetrators behind the Amjad Sabri murder and Awais Shah kidnapping.
He rushed to Karachi after the incidents of gory murder of murder of renowned qawwal Ajmad Sabri and high profile kidnapping of Sindh High Court chief justice’s son Awais Shah and vowed to find the terrorists behind creating unrest in the largest city of the country.
Once again COAS has shown to nation that he is leading the war against terror in true letter and spirit. He has already given statements calling for across the board accountability and has dismissed serving army officers too over the allegations of corruption. General Sharif has shown that the army is committed to lead by example. Indeed he is setting a high benchmark for the civilian administration to match. It is now up to civilian government to form terms of references to probe the revelations of Panama Papers, to show the will that political parties are also willing for across the board accountability. Political parties and media should pressurize the government into taking meaningful action over the Panama Papers issue so that democratic practice can take root.
The General has time and again shown that he is going to play his part in strengthening democracy in Pakistan and not let anyone derail the system. It is high time civilian government should also accelerate in efforts to make Pakistan terror-free. If civilian part of implementing NAP kept neglected, it would be extremely hard to eradicate the menace of terrorism any time soon in the country.
There is dire need to take action against terror abettors and facilitators to restore peace.
