The Indian-administered Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed a non-binding resolution calling for the restoration of the region’s special status, a move that has sparked renewed tensions between India and Pakistan.
The resolution, spearheaded by the pro-India National Conference, which leads the coalition government in the region, demands the safeguarding of Kashmir’s “identity, culture, and rights.” While the resolution did not explicitly mention Article 370, which granted Kashmir special autonomy, the message to New Delhi was clear.
“The assembly has done its job,” said Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Indian-administered Kashmir, who has been vocal about restoring Article 370 and statehood to the region.
The recent election results and the passage of this resolution underscore the deep-seated dissatisfaction among Kashmiris with India’s decision to revoke Article 370 in August 2019. This move stripped Kashmir of its autonomy and divided the state into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
While Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised to restore statehood to the region, other members of his cabinet have insisted that Article 370 is “done and dead.” This conflicting stance has further fueled the unrest in the region.
Kashmiris, across the political spectrum, from pro-independence parties to those aligned with New Delhi, are united in their demand for the restoration of the region’s special status. They argue that this status is essential to protect Kashmir’s unique identity and culture.
The revocation of Article 370 has significantly strained India-Pakistan relations. The move was widely condemned internationally, and Pakistan has repeatedly called for the restoration of Kashmir’s special status.
By reinstating Article 370, India could not only address the concerns of the Kashmiri people but also improve its relations with Pakistan. This could pave the way for the resumption of dialogue and a potential resolution to the decades-old Kashmir dispute.
However, hardliners within the Indian government continue to maintain that the Kashmir issue has been resolved. The passage of the resolution by the Kashmir Assembly presents a crucial opportunity for India to reconsider its stance and take steps to address the legitimate grievances of the Kashmiri people. Ignoring these demands could further escalate tensions in the region and have serious implications for peace and stability in South Asia.
