Justice for Khadija

June 8, 2018

The detailed judgment behind a controversial Lahore High Court decision to acquit the son of a prominent lawyer who is accused of mercilessly stabbing a classmate 23 times was issued on Thursday, with the judge ruling that the prosecution had failed to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

Last week Lahore High Court acquitted Shah Hussain, son of a lawyer, who was convicted earlier on charges of trying to kill his fellow student Khadija in a brutal knife attack. As per reports Khadija Siddiqui along with her sister was about to get into their car when allegedly Shah Hussain attacked Khadija with a knife and stabbed her 23 times in 2016, leaving her critically injured. A judicial magistrate had on July 29, 2017 handed down seven-year rigorous imprisonment to Hussain after finding him guilty of attempted murder. Later sentence was reduced to mere five years and now accused has been set as a free man.

After this recent judgment of LHC, victim expressed her shock and disappointment over the decision and termed that after solid evidences setting the culprit free is beyond her understanding as she herself is a law student. People on social media joined in and raised the issue and asked justice for Khadija. Various social activists, celebrities and common people expressed their concerns over the judgment. On social media people expressed support for Khadija and expressed outrage over the court verdict, #JusticeForKhadija became the top trend on Twitter in Pakistan.

Critics are of the view that Khadija case should have been an open-and-shut one but as accused happens to be the son of a senior lawyer who might have used his influence in the case. Human rights activists believe that if a person who stabs a girl 23 times has been set free, it will set a very bad example in the society and incidents of such violence and brutality would keep emerging.

Khadija vowed that she would appeal the LHC decision in the Supreme Court, but Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar has already taken notice of the acquittal of Shah Hussain and summoned the case’s record at the apex court’s Lahore registry on Sunday June 10. It is hoped that Kahdija would get justice as she has become a symbol of speaking up against the injustice and violence of men in the society.

CJP must be appreciated for taking notice of acquittal of Shah Hussain who stabbed Khadija 23 times.
