England took on Belgium in the Nations League last night, turning round a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 against FIFA’s number one ranked team at the moment. The winning goal came from Mason Mount, who dipped a shoulder and blasted a shot off a defender, sending the ball looping over Simon Mignolet in the Red Devils goal. That was his major contribution, but he was good all game and is clearly a player Gareth Southgate really likes.
He played well enough to generate some truly humbling comparisons from the Sky Sports pundits too, especially the way he came inside from his starting point out on the wing to create danger. “We were purring watching some of Kevin De Bruyne’s passes and the way he comes to find the ball,” Jamie Redknapp noted in quotes picked up by TalkSport. “When we talk about Mount I want him to do that more, he can do it for us, you haven’t got to stay out on the right.” De Bruyne wasn’t at his best last night, but still produced the most magical moment of a dull game – a slick outside of the foot pass that Yannick Carrasco should have finished. If Mount can get anywhere near that level at all, he will truly have taken his career to the next level.
