ISLAMABAD: Hundreds of protesters who converged on Islamabad on Sunday against the execution of Mumtaz Qadri have refused to disperse until their demands are met by the government.
On Sunday night, the government called in the army to secure the Red Zone after the protesters clashed with police and Rangers and set fire to containers and barricades in a bid to reach D-Chowk opposed the Parliament House.
More than 60 people, the majority of them police officers, were injured in the clashes on Sunday, according to hospital officials. The violent protests also set fire on fire many containers and ransacked metro bus stations. Metro bus services also remained suspended in the city as the protests held the city hostage.
Mobile phone services continued to remain suspended in the capital on Monday in the Red Zone and many of the surrounding areas of Islamabad. According to reports electricity and water supply has also been disconnected in the areas close to the protestor’s sit-in site. Mobile phone services were suspended without any prior notice which caused citizens of the twin cities tremendous problems in connecting their relatives and friends.
According to a charter of demand circulating on social media, the Sunni Tehreek and other religious outfits have called for implementation of Sharia and release of prisoners among other demands.
