India continued their solid start to the World Cup by beating fancied South Africa by a margin of 130 runs. Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first. India lost opener Rohit Sharma for a duck but Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli put on a hundred runs plus stand for the second wicket before Kohli departed for (46). There was no respite for the Proteas as Dhawan and new batsman Ajinkya Rahane put on another hundred run stand. Dhawan was finally dismissed on (137), followed shortly by Rahane (79). India threatened to post a target of over 330 at one stage but some excellent death over bowling by South Africa restricted India to 307.
After losing openers Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla cheaply there was slight hope for South Africa with Faf du Plessis and captain AB de Villiers on the crease. But once India got rid of AB de Villiers via a run out, they choked South Africa and limited them to a score of just 177. Shikhar Dhawan was awarded the Man of the Match for his (137). India are now top of Pool B with two wins out of two, while Pakistan are at the bottom after losing both their games against India and West Indies.
In the Pool A match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, Srilanka emerged victorious despite a slight scare. Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews put Afghanistan into bat after winning the toss. Afghanistan posted a decent looking total of 232 thanks to a combined effort, as eight of their players managed to get into double figures.
Sri Lanka were rocked early on in the chase after losing both openers for ducks. Two more wickets fell in the next ten over as the Afghans managed to reduce Sri Lanka to 4-51 at one stage. But Mahela Jayawardene (100), Angelo Mathews (44) and Thisara Perera’s (47) not out took the Islanders home to register their first win of the tournament.
