India lost all moral authority in IoK

August 19, 2019

New Delhi has lost all moral authority in IoK and sensing erosion of its belligerent stance at international level, keeps resorting to illegal, undemocratic and inhuman measures that have resulted in huge loss of lives and property in the region. The recent build-up of forces and their brutal use against an unarmed population is adding fuel to fire. World leaders and international bodies should immediately take notice of the irresponsible and irrational behavior of Indian leadership as it will have adverse implications for regional and international peace. The high-level Pakistan’s civil and military leaders have reiterated that Islamabad will stand by the people of Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) through thick and thin and would help them achieve their right to self-determination in the line with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, warning India not to provoke the country into a confrontation. They said that Pakistan remains ready to defend itself against any Indian misadventure or aggression and will continue to provide all-out diplomatic, moral and political support to the brave people of Kashmir. The warning was issued against the backdrop of the situation arising out of tensions in IHK and the increase in ceasefire violations by India along the Line of Control (LoC), especially the use of cluster ammunition to target the civilian population across the border. Former IHK chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have been placed under house arrest; curfew-like restrictions have been imposed. Internet services have also been suspended, a common tactic to prevent anti-India demonstrations from being organized and stop dissemination of news. The world watches as people and their voices are being muzzled. Congress leaders warned Narendra Modi against abrogation of Article 35A and Article 370, which gives special status to Kashmiris. They also warned of the consequences of any attempt to abrogate Article 370 and Article 35A of the constitution or carry out delimitation of constituencies or trifurcating the held state of Kashmir. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India has consistently advocated an end to occupied Kashmir’s special constitutional status, which prevents outsiders from buying property there, arguing that such laws have hindered its ‘integration’ with the rest of India. Prime Minister Imran Khan has condemned India’s use of cluster munitions on civilian population living close to LoC and called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take note of the international threat to peace and security.  It is time to end the long night of suffering for the people of occupied Kashmir.

They must be allowed to exercise their right to self-determination according to UNSC resolutions. The only road to peace and security in South Asia runs through a peaceful and just settlement of Kashmir.
