It was being reported that army would have an increased role in recruiting police officials in Karachi and on Monday Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan while talking to a press conference confirmed the news.
He said that the decision has been taken to further improve the law and order situation in Karachi and to depoliticize the police department. It is an open secret that nepotism has become a basic aspect in recruiting police officials all over the country but situation is worst in Sindh province. The police have been marred by corruption and politically influenced appointments over the years. Around 20,000 police personnel, including 2,000 ex-servicemen will be recruited to deal with the deteriorating law and order situation in the city. The job is authorized to army in order to assist in ensuring only merit based recruitment and to provide them with training.
Indeed military’s role in capacity building of police and other law enforcement agencies across the country is laudable. Army has achieved great successes in eliminating terrorism and extremism in the country. Capacity building of police and other law enforcing agencies is a positive step forward.
Currently Rangers have been given the extended duties to maintain law and order situation of the city. But in reality it is the job of police and eventually police department would be responsible for the security maintenance. It was needed to take steps towards capacity-building of the police department so they could maintain law and order situation. Capacity development of police forces at the similar level of military would strengthen the department and help tackling issue of terror more efficiently.
Police department needs to get rid of political influence.
