My discerning readers will find this read on June 13. Some years back it was really a sad day and still I can feel the pain of that afternoon I lost my mentor and guru Malik Miraj Kahalid.
In 1996 I joined IIUI as a student of master degree in faculty of English Language and Literature. If memory serves better after the first semester the IIU administration decided to raise the fee upto 100 percent. The very next day my write up appeared in a local Urdu Daily wherein I criticized the administration very harshly and the main target of my criticism was the then Rector Malik Miraj Khalid. It was so harsh that now I can’t even reproduce the excerpts of it for my readers.
The next day Mr. S.M.A Rauf the then Head of the Department called me in his room and told that honorable Rector wants to see me in his office immediately. He shrugged his shoulders in a cold way and said sorry Mr Asif I can’t do anything , you go and face the music.
Well aware of the fact that something not good in the offing I went to the Rector office and after one hour when I left, I actually left the room of my mentor. So kind he was.
He was so sweet , kind and a gentleman that if I start remembering him , it will take hours and a narrow space of column doesn’t allow me to do that.
These few lines are just a humble tribute to the man who was the man among men. I owe him a lot. IIUI owes him a lot. He was a fatherly figure for the students of IIUI. May his soul rest in peace. We will never forget you sir. You have been a source of inspiration for your students.
