Imran Khan, the leader of the PTI, stated on Wednesday that President Arif Alvi was in touch with him and would speak with him on the choice of a new army chief because he was the party leader.
He claimed that since I am the leader of party, the president may speak with me if the prime minister can communicate with a “absconder” (a reference to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif).
“I’m in touch with the president regarding the summary of a crucial appointment. He’ll talk to me about everything. I am a party leader because the prime minister goes to a fugitive, Imran claimed in an interview with a private news station.
He continued, “The president will definitely address problem with me. I am not aware of who they will appoint, but the president and I have decided that we will play with this within law and do whatever is in the law and the Constitution.”
The controversy started earlier this month when it was widely reported that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif travelled to London to supposedly consult with elder Sharif about new position.
The meeting has drawn harsh criticism from PTI, which claims that a person who does not hold public office and has “absconded” from the law shouldn’t participate in discussions about what is regarded as the most significant appointment in the nation.
It is important to note that Shehbaz Sharif, prime minister, is anticipated to consult Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa on Thursday regarding choice of his successor.
Once a decision had been made, prime minister would suggest to President Arif Alvi to name the general as new army chief. It is unclear, though, whether Alvi, who has previously refused to support a move by the PML-N-led government, would accept the recommendation or send it back for revision.
