ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan burnt his electricity bill during his speech at D-Chowk after asking questions from the government to explain the unprecedented rise in the electricity units.
His move was part of what he calls his civil disobedience movement to overthrow Prime Minister Nawaz Shair. Following their leader, scores of PTI workers also burnt their electricity bills at the sit-in. Addressing the ‘Azadi March’ participants, Imran Khan asked Nawaz Sharif why wasn’t electricity theft reduced when the prices of electricity have been increased by 80%. He said he had promised the public to burn down the utility bills as part of the civil disobedience campaign. PTI chief said that the excessive amount of bills is received from the general public when someone else steals the electricity.
He said he is fighting for the rights of the poor, adding that the nations that don’t confront oppression are destined to remain enslaved. Khan said that Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) carried out a rally in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but there were no obstacles placed from the provincial government. “People even in PML-N event chanted the slogan ‘go Nawaz go’”, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Khan said that the PTI will bring back Pakistan’s Rs200 billion stashed in Swiss banks. He said that he will also reopen cases against the unscrupulous elements who secured their release from accountability
