Pets are not human but display many human qualities like strong personalities, emotions and preferences. Pets provides an elderly a reason to get of bed and carry own with their lives. For elderly whose human support system is have been seriously compromised, pets along with companionship provide affection and understanding as well. Looking after pets make elder wanted and needed. This consciousness of being useful fills them with a feeling of self-esteem.

Pet ownership provides several psychological, physiological and social benefits. Medical research has proved that pets increases the longevity of those who have had heart attacks. Presence of pets is also associated to help maintaining the blood pressure. Children who have pets have better immune systems and are less likely to take days off from school. Pets are the silent custodians of children’s secret and private thoughts. Pets are not a cure or a substitute. They are a recommendation for happiness, fun, friendship, love, activity and better health.
